Ayurvedic India
(country visited: India)
The every day of stresses of life often makes one wonder
whether this world of today is the civilised one or
just a “modern” one. Civilisation, just
like democracy, has lost it’s original meaning
and back to roots is where we need to go. It is thus
back to one of the most ancient world, India, and to
one of the most ancient forms of every day healthy life
practice, Ayurveda..
Ayurvedic Treatment
India is noted, among many other things, for its Ayurvedic
herb and oil treatments. “Ayur” means life
and “veda” means science. The whole philosophy
of Ayurveda is that the whole body must be nurtured
- body, mind and spirit. Since this practice is hardly
in line with our modern lifestyle, we recommend that
you take some time off, for your self, and stay in a
Ayurveda Centre, so that the whole body can be 'purified'.
Massages alone don't help. The right diet, rest, environment,
relaxation all contribute to the panchakarma (treatment).

ABOUT AYURVEDA
According to the Panchabootha (5 elements) philosophy,
every body is made up of vata (gas), pitta (heat), kappa
(phlegm). The five parts that need to be taken care
off are vasti (bladder), vamana (digestion), videdama
(waste), nasya (nose), asravisru (blood). The Ayurvedic
oils, herbs, powders, potions balance these elements
so that the body, mind and spirit are in fine form.
The treatments are variously divided into rejuvenative,
preventive, curative. The most common rejuvenative therapy
is the herbal oil message, where two oils are selected
according to one's body constituency and massaged lightly
but firmly throughout the body - head, back, thighs,
limbs. The massage tones up the whole body and, if followed
by a steam-bath (in water mixed with herbal powders),
is fresh and invigorating. Most ayurvedic regulars have
this massage once a week.
Herbal massage oil is mostly made from coconut which
is found in abundance in Kerala, but it's the numerous
herbs that are mixed with the oil that contribute to
the efficacy of the Ayurvedic treatments. These herbs
are grown in gardens by the various Ayurvedic Centres
in the state and are crushed and ground with the oil.
There are also herbal powders and juices which are made
into arishtams (liquid potions) and lahiams (thick jellies)
which can be consumed. Their smells, extracts and flavors
help in the various curative treatments which today
attract people from all over the world.
In the Ayurvedic text books, rejuvenation has been
termed as Rasayana. A definition of Rasayana in Ayurveda
is described as "That which destroys the old age
and disease."
That means by taking Rasayana you remain healthy and
young. Even when you are in your 80's or 90's you will
be able to perform your normal duties and you don't
have to depend on others. Rasayana is only one of the
eight branches of Ayurveda.
Rejuvenation or Rasayana is not made for sense gratification
as many today think. According to Ayurveda rejuvenation
is taken so that after taking it you become healthy
and give your services for others. It is taken so that
you can explore the spiritual aspect of life and help
the society, the sick, the hungry, the poor and the
handicapped.
You can learn how to maintain a balance between material
and spiritual aspects of life and help others also to
understand it. This will help in establishing permanent
peace, happiness and love for which we are always hankering
and for which different governments are spending millions
of dollars to achieve. Ayurveda says that at present
we are using a wrong approach to achieve these things,
that's why we are getting frustrated.
Aim of Rasayana
The Rasayana or Rejuvenation therapy aims at keeping
the enzymes in the tissue cells in their normal functioning
condition. These cells are to be revitalised and their
composition has to be changed. The tranquility of the
mind has to be promoted and the nerves as well as bones
are to be kept soft and soothened. This prevents the
process of ageing and makes the individual free from
any disease even during an advanced age. He will be
able to see things like before and the sharpness of
hearing and vision continues. The glow in his face and
the colour of his skin remains as before. It is with
this in view one has to resort to rejuvenation therapy.
Time of Administration
The sooner the therapy is administered to the individual
the better. In more advanced age, this therapy does
not work well. Its effect becomes limited. Before starting
the therapy, the following two points are to be observed:
The body of the individual is cleaned of the dirt or
the metabolic waste products through specialised therapies
indicated in the Panch Karma. If the Rasayana is taken
after cleaning the toxins from the body, it gives the
best results, though it can be also taken without it.
The person taking Rasayana is taught to think, speak
and work in such a way which would be conducive to development
of a healthy society. In fact, these conducts are given
a lot of importance in Ayurveda and they themselves
are also considered to have rejuvenating effects on
the human body.
Method of taking Rasayana
Most Rasayana therapy is taken in the Kutipravesika
method. In this method the person has to stay indoors
while taking the Rasayana.
Elaborate arrangements are made for the construction
of a special type of cottage where the individual is
to be confined. The person has to strictly follow the
diets and other instructions of the physician. He should
undergo Panch Karma therapy before taking the rejuvenation. |
